With oral conscious sedation, a sedative medication is administered (typically in pill form) about an hour before your dental procedure. Commonly used medications include triazolam (Halcion®) from the diazepam (Valium®) family, although alternatives like zaleplon and lorazepam may also be used.
This sedation induces grogginess and may lead to sleepiness, although patients can still communicate with their dentist if needed and awaken easily with a gentle nudge. Due to the temporary effects on memory and motor skills, patients require a companion to drive them home after the procedure.
